Ryzen 2

A year ago, I bought a Ryzen 1700 with much hype around it at the time. Yes, it is not quite as critically acclaimed in the power department as some had hoped but I am still happy with it.



A Brief History

The Ryzen 1700 was not the most powerful launch chip from the new Ryzen range, that crown fell to the 1800x (strangely they never made an 1800). Some weird things cropped up in the news, from people ordering Ryzen 1600 chips and finding certain batches of 1800's had been labelled 1600's instead (great for some people!), to old AMD/Intel rivalry memes being reversed showing Intel as the joker in the current CPU climate.

 Why this Blog, Why now?

It just so happens that Ryzen 2 has been launched and amazingly everything is cheaper! I bought my Ryzen 1700 chip at an amazing price at the time of £330, launch price. Ryzen 2 2700, well, the launch price is £30 more than the current 1700 chip!

The 2700 is retailing (19/04/2018) at £256 on Amazon and the 1700 on Amazon as well is £229. Well thats £100 off the value of my Ryzen lost, feels like a new car value issue.

So what are you getting. Lets compare these 2 processors to give you an idea.

So we can see, the 2 processors are pretty much identical except for clock speeds and support RAM configurations. This is the same across most of the Ryzen 2 processor line. The first VEGA APU's were launched towards the end of last year with some variants only coming in now. The VEGA APU's however, are based on Ryzen 2, the refresh of Ryzen and can be distinguished by the U on the end of the number, i.e. Ryzen 2700U.

The future of Ryzen

If you have kept up with leaks and rumours, you will know that AMD are planning to launch 7nm processors around the end of 2019. Ryzen 2 uses 12+ (some components are 12nm and some are 14nm)

Running a search on Intel's site does not display any processors using a smaller lithography yet, however, Intel's codename Cannon Lake has started shipping to manufacturers which apparently contains a 10nm processor (CES 2018)
